| | | | | | | Humans have certain inborn tendencies to prefer to use our minds in particular ways. These preferences form the basis of personality types. The most thoroughly studied and widely used model for understanding personality type is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). A simple pencil-and-paper test that takes 30 to 40 minutes to administer, the MBTI is a standard used routinely in management consulting and organizational development as well as counseling practice. The MBTI is a personality type test that looks at our preferred ways of using our brains in four pairs of activity. This results in sixteen possible patterns or types that influence how we think, perceive the world, interact with other people and make decisions. When you understand type mechanics, you have a powerful tool to increase your success and satisfaction at work and at home. Here's how it works: When our minds are active, we are involved in one of two mental activities: There are two opposite ways that people perceive: There are 2 opposite ways that people judge: There are 2 opposite ways we focus our mental energy: Extraverts - focus more on the external world of people, experience, & activity. Introverts - focus more on the internal world of ideas, memories, & emotions.
These elements combine into 16 different types, all of which offer valuable gifts, all of which have predictable pitfalls.
