| Is it counseling or psychotherapy? "Professional counselors work with individuals, families, groups and organizations. Counseling is a collaborative effort between the counselor and client. Professional counselors help clients identify goals and potential solutions to problems which cause emotional turmoil; seek to improve communication and coping skills; strengthen self-esteem; and promote behavior change and optimal mental health. Through counseling you examine the behaviors, thoughts and feelings that are causing difficulties in your life. You learn effective ways to deal with your problems by building upon personal strengths. A professional counselor will encourage your personal growth and development in ways that foster your interest and welfare." American Counseling Association We often use the terms "counseling" and "therapy" or "psychotherapy" as if they were interchangeable. Strictly speaking, "psychotherapy" usually refers to treatment of more serious conditions or that targets deeper levels of change than counseling. In practice, the two overlap considerably. In either case, your counselor or therapist is essentially a consultant who works with you to help you make changes you want to make. A good therapist will support you, challenge you, show you what you can't see, educate you and otherwise join you for awhile on your journey through life. A good therapist is not there to judge you. We don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to working with our clients. Rather, we see therapy as the natural result of engaging with people authentically and respectfully. We draw on various schools of thought and decades of experience to collaborate with our clients to find or create tools that optimally that address their unique lives.
